Friday in Retrospect

So this past Friday was a cool day. I started my day off by witnessing some carnage in my backyard. A few mourning doves were eating birdseed off the ground as I stood at my kitchen window. Suddenly whoosh, out of nowhere, the cooper's hawk descended upon them. He stood atop the dove that didn't flee in time. The poor bird was twitching and trying to free itself from the grip of the hawk's talons. The hawk kept looking around, his red eyes seemed to look right through me. I thougth that he was aware of my presence and therefore was unsure how to proceed. I wished he would kill the dove already because it's suffering was more than apparent. Finally the movement under his feet stopped. The hawk started to agressively tear out the feathers and litter my garden with them. After several minutes, he took his prey to the top of our swingset. When I returned home from work, I decided he must've finished the plucking and eating from up there. It was awesome and horrifying at the same time.

When I got home from work, my husband told me I had a great mail day. I was happy to learn that I had gotten my Ohio state tax refund, a generous giftcard for a local spa (courtesy of my brother in law) and also the formal pictures we had taken of the kids at ballet. That is probably my best mail day ever.

Have you tried putting dog hair on them? I'm about to try it on my garden. The deer are all over it.
